Recently, the phenomenon that many who pursue postgraduate studies take up part-time or even full-time jobs has around much public concern. There is no concensus of opinions among the public about whether these postgraduates should spend a large portion of their energy on the jobs. Some people think that this practice benefits these postgraduates because life is not an ivory tower, and college postgraduates can not confine all their activities within the walls of colleges and universities; as social beings, they need to practice their social skills, learn how to communicate with people efficiently, develop team spirit, and accommodate their theoretical knowledge to the demands of society; all these qualities can be honed in actually participating in various social jobs. Another important consideration for many postgraduates to take up jobs while they pursue studies at college is that the jobs can offer them payment which can definitely improve their quality of life. After all, their families have paid so much for their education all these years, now it is time that they should manage to support themselves with what they have learned so far.
I am among those who disapprove of this practice as I believe that its major drawback outweighs all the possible benefits. Knowledge is like an ocean; the more you explore it, the more mysteries you will discover. So more devotion is required at the postgraduate stage. Taking up part-time jobs not only takes up one’s precious time which is supposed to be used for research, but also distracts one with all the worldly attractions from focusing on the study and research. In short, temporarily, the part-time jobs may bring you some material rewards, but in the long run, they may cost you the valuable opportunity to elevate yourself to a new height in the specialized field which you choose in the first place.
